Note of thanks

Yesterday, my mother had the opportunity to go and see my father. He is currently doing fine and I pray that he will be safe and fine in future too. I will keep you all posted on how he is as the days pass by. I did not get the chance to talk to my father but hearing from my mother that he is fine has given me some comfort.

From the depths of my heart, I thank all of you for your well-wishes and prayers. I want you to know that I've read each posted comment and appreciate your reaction, your time and words. Thank you to our friends who have supported us through these intensely difficult times. Thank you especially to those who were ready to come forward and speak on our behalf. Thank you even to those who may not have agreed with my father's views but were not accepting of the recent turn of events from the current president. It takes courage to make those decisions and I respect that. Thank you to those who have criticized or turned us away when we asked for help. Without such criticism and indifference, I might not have felt the need to create this blog. But above all, thank you to my friends and family. It is a huge relief to know for certain where my father is and that he is okay.

I wish you all the courage we need to make it through these times of trials when our beliefs are shaken.

Sincerely,
Aparna Fonseka

  10. Aparna, your father was not taken away or abducted by Kola Koit or Kalu Koti of UNP's 88/89 regime or any other unknown masked gunmen or white vans. He was taken into custody by the Military Police while the presence of the media and other opposition policians.
So, why were you worried about his whereabouts and wellbeing. This is just a political and media stunt by you and your mother. Its evident by you and your mother going before the media, before anything else, and cry for any information about your father, where as the government was saying fromt he moment your father was taken into custody that he is alive and well, and you guys have access to him at any time.
So, its obvious you and your mother are crying for sympathy and sympathy votes. He'll have to face the law and if he can prove his innocence, he'll be with you soon.

  14. Hi,

I can understand your feelings but thousands of Tamil mothers, wifes and children are in this feeling for last 30 years. I am sure your dad will come out very soon. Once he come out if you are a true woman/human then please write something about the innocent tamils in SL Government jails for years and years.

  15. Aparna,

What happened to your father for him to betray the soldier who faithfully executed his command? His recent BBC interview speaks volumes about his betrayals. Where did things go wrong? Perhaps you may know. Is it his insatiable hunger for power or the unbearable feeling of rejection by a majority of Sri Lankans.

  16. It is amazing how Sinhalese extremists and Tamil extremists are reacting in exactly the same way to this news (i.e. saying that Fonseka deserves it). Perhaps they're both campaigning for the wrong thing, instead of campaigning for a Sinhalese Sri Lanka or a Tamil Eelam they should be campaigning to be on an island together somewhere away from the rest of us normal Sri Lankans. Maybe there they might even discover that they have much in common!

Sarath Fonseka is not a traitor for revealing armchair soldiers in the GOVERNMENT who ordered war crimes to be committed. It is those government ministers/officials who put the average soldier in danger by ordering them to commit those crimes. It is not professional soldiering (& certainly not consistent with Sinhalese/Buddhist values) to kill surrendering soldiers. Killing innocents is the business of terrorists, not soldiers. Those armchair soldiers like Defence Minister Rajapakse are the real traitors.

The same fate has been visited on Sarath Fonseka as many of the Tamil Tiger cadres. So what? How many of those cadres were willing to contest democratic elections? How many of them were willing to testify against their own leaders/leadership to bring justice to bear? And even if you don't accept what I've just said, does mistreatment of one party make it right to do the same to another?? If you complain about it in one instance, you don't have the right to turn around and say 'ohhh wait no this particular guy doesn't deserve to be justly treated, because he's a Sinhalese war hero'. If you act that way then you really are revealing your cause as false.

Wish you all the best Aparna, your Father is certainly in my prayers, keep the updates coming!

  17. Hi Aparna,
First of all I'm so sorry about what you and your family is going through. I can only imagine the stress you must all be under.
My name is Raisa and I am a reporter at the Sunday Leader newspaper. I know this is a somewhat unorthodox way of contacting you, but I don't have a contact number. I was wondering if you would be willing to do an interview via email. I know you are far too busy to do an interview face to face. If you are free, please contact me at raisawicks87@gmail.com .
    Thanks,
    Raisa

  19. Govt.’s attempt to block election petition being filed – to obstruct General’s signature being taken
(Lanka-e-News, Feb.11, 2010, 9.30AM) It is reported that the Govt. is scheming to obstruct the filing of election petition against the recent Presidential election results by the Presidential candidate Gen. Fonseka. Using the officials there are concerted attempts by the Govt. to block his signature being taken, which is a requirement for the filing of petition.

UNP Gen. Secretary Tissa Attanayake stated, the signature of his is a mandatory requirement. But, by the Govt. holding him in the military custody and refusing even his Lawyers to meet him under controversial circumstances is a machination to obstruct him from signing the petition.
The election petition has to be filed within 21 days of the announcement of the results. The final day therefore is the 17th of February. All documents have been finalized for the filing of petition, but the authorities have not provided the opportunity to obtain the General’ signature on the application so far. In a Democratic country, allowing this is indispensable and is a responsibility of the authorities.

It is proposed that the election petition is filed on the 15th, Monday.
Meanwhile, arrangements have been made to file another petition for a vote re count in the Supreme Court next week. A further petition is also to be filed against the State media’s conduct flagrantly violating the election laws and the SC directives, in the run up to elections, he observed.

  20. Tissa Attanayake is sitting on his brain and talk these days. How can you stop a petition by taking him to arrest? It is lawyers who filed the petition on behalf of him . thats all. and I saw some where Wijedasa Rajapakse is exploring the ways to contest from the jail fo rhim. Please tell him not to waist his time if he does not know the law, that is also possible. Even CHandrasekeran for the first time contested from the jail and elected. Please dont belive what these 3rd grade politicinas say. SF also has become one of those. Aparana please keep way from them and ask your dad also to do so.

Your dad is kept in a safe place where he deserves to be. When he pinched the innocent ones you all didn't feel it. Only now you are feeling the real pinch. Let him face the reward for what he caused to 40,000 + many more tamils. Those who cause sufferings to others must suffer for themselves.

  30. Hello dear,
how it aches!Imagine the sufferings your lovely dad brought on thousands of innocent tamils (not all tamils were tigers)...How he wiped out -after heay torture- the entire Tiger leadership once they were captured(instead of making them face trial)...how he massacred Prabha's 11 year old kid...how his servant (another general)smashed Prabha's head...Your dad deserves life sentence not DEATH(thru this rogue president)to brood over his atrocities. You end up paying your crimes.
