February 10th

Yesterday, Sri Lankan civilians rose up to demand a valid, reasonable answer for my father's arrest. They weren't looking for a fight. They were looking for an answer. The people were holding non-violent rallies all over Sri Lanka. When thugs began throwing rocks at the protestors, the police only stood by and watched (http://sl-tube.com/video/Battle_in_Colombo_a_Protest_Demanding_Release_of_Sarath_Fonseka ).It has been over 48 hours that the government has held my father without charge sheets. They have intermittently come up with reasons such as: my father conversed with the political parties while he was serving the country as general. My father clearly mentioned and showed to the public that he would not do or say anything regarding politics while he was still serving the country in uniform ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSzNfY26wLI ). After the elections took place, their allegation was that my father was conspiring to start a military coup against the government to assassinate the president. This is a pointless argument because if he had wanted to do such a thing, he could have easily done it while in the army. He had no such intention.

On the 8th of February when my father was arrested, a feeling of tremendous helplessness overwhelmed me. I called up my mother and was unable to bear hearing her cry. I wanted to speak up, speak out but I didn't know where or how to start. I felt weak. The last time I had heard her cry so was when my father had been taken to the hospital after the suicide bomb attack. She's been the rock of strength in our family and when she faced the media on the 9th and spoke her heart out through tears, so many mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers cried with her. It felt to me like Sri Lanka was weeping, too. The reactions and support we've had since has given me the courage and hope to be strong, knowing that our family hasn't been left alone. I've been getting messages asking how my father is, prayers and concerns for my family from Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, and Sri Lankans of every ethnicity. People have risen against injustice non-violently and it was encouraging to see that people are refusing to be blinded again; religious leaders such as Ven. Malwathu Mahanayke (http://www.lankatruth.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4678:-this-leader-doesnt-listen-to-us-only-pretends-he-takes-our-advice-ven-malwatu-mahanayke&catid=35:local&Itemid=50) and Mahanayake of Asgiriya Chapter are some examples (
http://www.lankatruth.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4686:arrest-of-gen-fonseka-is-illegal-and-unacceptable-mahanayake-of-asgiriya-chapter&catid=35:local&Itemid=62 ).

I do not affiliate myself with politics. I write this blog as a Sri Lankan, a civilian, and a daughter. I respect those who are risking their lives for my father but I do not want others to lose their fathers, mothers, brothers, or sisters either. I realize that my father is not just my father but that he has become a symbol for the nation. And yet, because he is my father I cannot express enough gratitude to the people who have risked their lives for his and for our country. Because of your commitment, my mother was allowed to file a fundamental rights petition in the Supreme Court against my father's arrest. We have also made an appeal to the Red Cross ICRS requesting to make arrangements for my father's military doctor who is familiar with his medical history since the suicide attack to attend his medical needs. He still has a lot of shrapnel parts in his body and needs regular medicine for them to heal. We hope that the appeal will work. My family will never forget the sacrifices and commitments you've made, big or small. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

Yours sincerely,
Aparna Fonseka

  1. I hope you gain the strength to fight - With SLn politics its not about opinion, choices or options. I think it is the mental stability and the power within you to give a good fight. I hope your dad is safe, I hope you come out stronger and nobler out of this incident and guide the island nation towards true democracy but above all to walk out of this incident sound and safe. I am so sorry for the pain you endure. Sri Lanka has so unkindly treated one of her bests.

  9. Why is this true Indian worried about Sri Lankan matters? Her father had nothing to do with Tamil people, her father had a job with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam which was labeled a terrorist Organization globally. Her dad fought to protect the soverginity of the land, that was not something he could question it was something he entrusted his life to DO!

  10. your dad is not a good man. he must be punished. so don't beg to others. your dad killed 100000 people,so real punishment is that he must be dead.

Don't worry about your enemy rajapaksey, he will also punished by God.

when tamil people died, what you was doing.why not start blog at that time to publish the unhuman activity by your father.

  12. who were around your father?? All evill forces that directly or indirectly supported LTTE against the SL army. Your father decided to unite with the traitors and work against our security forces and SL government. Now he is facing the consequences. Its good that government/Army took the initiatives. Otherwise he will be witnessing against the countery in USA by now.

  15. You people are very worried about the welfare of your father in the jail. Do you people have any conscience?
    Are you God fearing?
How many innocent people your father has killed?
Did they do any wrong things like your father?
If they belong to the same race as Prabhakaran, is it their fault?
How heartless your father would have been to kill innocent men women and helpless children?
He foxed many LTTE cadre to surrender and killed them when they are unarmed.
Is it allowed in your religion, or any religion in the world.
And your father is ready to expose Rajapakshe, that he was ordered to kill LTTE after they surrender.
Shameless Fonseka, he carried out the order, however.
    Because, he wanted to kill.
Srilanka is ruled by heartless fellows.
For what your father has done to these innocent Tamils, your whole community of Sinhalese will be cursed. Even the innocent Sinhalese.
Your father wiped almost the entire Tamils to satisfy another fox, Rajapakshe.
He also will have a similar ending.
Even if your father repents for his acts whole heartedly, God will never excuse him.
The entire humanity will never excuse him.
He'll go to hell, along with his family members, his sympathizers, Rajapakshe and his blood thirsty brothers.
Shame on you, you have started a website to get the sympathy of people.
    He deserves this and more.
Even hanging him in public is a lesser punishment.

  21. Aparna, can you please explain us how your bortehr in laws mother got 15 miilion rupees in her safe along with $550,000?
It is ok if that is her money. But Pro SF media lanka e news claims that is election campain money. So what your aunty was doing with that money? shouldnt it be with the campaign manager? what about the USD? as you know in Sri Lanka you can not bring more than $10,000 into country/ So how come they got this much of cash? is it part of the said USA funding? can you please please explain us..

Ah one more thing..according to your mother, the place where you dad is detained is not suitable for a General. Apperantly it is a 2 bedroom house...But during the election time your mom and dad used to claim that you gusy only have a 2 bed room house in hokandara..If it is the case, how your dad was planning to live in a 2 bed room house after retirement?

  23. Aparna, sorry for being so blunt, the Singhalese have shown their ugly face once again. The pre planted notion by the government that “Tamils will vote overwhelmingly for Saranth Fonseka” has let them vote for most corrupted and wicked, Rajapakshe. Singhalese could not stomach that the Tamils whom they vengefully bashed and totally annihilated (with the help of other countries) only a few months back could be elevated to be Kingmakers. This election results reiterate the call for Separate state for Tamils.

  24. Do you know, what your father and Gen. Janaka Perera did in Jaffna. You should know. Go and ask. Your father and Jabnaka Perera single handedly finished our people. How many massgraves will come after yuor family. If there is a god, if there is justice then we will see what will happen to those who killied teen aged boys and girls and burried them in massgraves.

Those screams and creid will be heard again and again in that sick country of sick people. Oh, god how did your father unleashed such a terror????

  25. There is no difference between Osama Bin Ladan and your father.
Both kill innocent civilians without any justification.
However, Osama is far better than your father.
though he killed many quite unexpected.
But, your father is unique; he killed people who surrendered.
And Tamil kids because of the fear that they'll later become tigers.
Also, Osama killed only less number of people.
But your blood thirsty father killed scores of them.
Did you visit the website which shows scores of dead people?
How many terrorists did you find amongst the heaps of the dead?
Old and withered, helpless women and hapless children were paraded and killed like killing pests in the fields.
As far as I remember, only Pol Pot killed masses of his citizens in Cambodia.
Your blood thirsty father tried to wipe the entire race of Tamils.
We are all sure that for another two or three centuries, another heartless and cruel killer like your father will not be born.
If you look into history, you'll see that such killers, criminals, heartless and cruel people will be born in the world once in several centuries.
Srilanka is cursed, that two sinners are born there. Your father and Rajapakshe.
We pray that your father should not go to his gallows so quickly.
He should live every millisecond in guilt.
    Oh. I'm sorry.
    Guilt is for humans only.
    Your father is inhuman.
He'll never have any guilt even during his last breath.
There is no forgiveness for your father.

  26. I can see lots of Tamils speaking out,
Where were they when small kids dragged from houses and force to fight as solders. Some were never being to School.
Kids of 5 - 12, even kids of 15 are kept in laps by parents and being loved in my community..
What about those poor Tamil kids? Don't they deserve to be kids?
This war is ended thanks to this general and all kids can be kids thanks to him..
please pay your gratitude for the man who bought peace to the country..
Of cause the tigers the once who attacked army fought back. The gen Fonseka will not be fighting and killing tighers if their wasn't a war going on..
he fought to defeat tigers. so he had to kill them in battle.. Innocent people got killed by getting caught in middle of the battle.which is not the army commanders intention.
anyone who analyze the way the army fought would realize that they were trying to minimize casualties both in army and the civilians..
please don't insult a good man..
Truly his intention is not killing innocent civilians. He fought for their safety.

  27. Hai Nai,
    I'm very honest with you.
I'm not at all a sympathizer of LTTE.
I never supported their action. I hated them whenever they pulled children, trained them and put them to fight.
I didn't like their methods of killing by suicide bombing or any other means.
Srilankans and Tamils are same for me.
    First they are human beings.
Races are determined by where they are borne, or where they originate from.
Fonseka didn't fight and kill them.
    He foxed them.
He killed them when they were unarmed and came to surrender, waving white flags.
    Friend, be honest.
Do you accept killing deliberate killing of innocent lives?
I'm sure you'll not, at the heart of the heart.
And those innocent civilians killed were not caught in crossfire.
They were deliberately killed by the bloodthirsty Fonseka.
Don't you think the scene reminds one of PolPot's Cambodia a few decades ago.
They'll find many such mass graves in your country.
    That's the truth.
Sorry friend, he's not a good man.
    He's a very EVIL MAN.
    The entire world knows it.
That's why Rajapakshe was dead against journalists visiting them.
