Yet no Justice

It’s been a while since I’ve written and I have thought of writing for a while but because of all the surprising things that my life brings everyday, I had no clue where to start and what to write about. There is so much I have to share. Every morning I wake up wondering what will happen today to my family and how will the day end for us. Today, I decided it was time again to write. I know most of you have thousands of questions in your mind and are confused. I am as confused too. I understand how difficult it is to seek any information because the government media has flooded and drowned the country with false information. So here I am today, writing once again. I will write everything I know and speak for those who are afraid, for those who fear for their lives.

I have read all of your comments on my blog and feel that I must clarify some pressing matters. My father did not kill innocent civilians. He fought to end the deaths of innocent civilians. He did not betray his men; he took the blame that others heaped on our soldiers. He was an army general and as such, took necessary steps to stop violence in our country. It wasn’t just him, we as a nation were in it together.

Having said that, I do not endorse violence. I do not think violence justifies anything but I have no part in the decision-making. He is my father and was my country’s general. I do feel the pain some of you have gone through. I know in war times it is incredibly difficult, mothers crying from the north to south. We lost our families, sisters, brothers from every corner of Sri Lanka. We, all of us Sri Lankans, not just Tamils. However, we must not give in to hatred. Why divide a nation when we can work better together? We must through all this hurt and pain and sorrow find a way to bridge the divide that has killed so many of us. The fact is that the war is over now. It is time to develop our country into the one we envision. We should get rid of these labels that divide us. We maybe Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, and other race, religion and ethnicities, but deep down inside, deep, deep, deep down in our core, we are Sri Lankans. Despite the hurt and pain and sorrow, we are still Sri Lankans and we must not lose sight of that. What will we have to gain if we fight against each other constantly?

We need to work toward identifying the problems we have and finding ways to solve it. Through this blog, I’ve realized that if we were to work together, to create a network where we can channel all this hatred and sorrow and pain and hurt to heal Sri Lanka, we might get somewhere. Is there a way we could fight corruption? Is there a way we could fight poverty? Is there a way we could defy the government and make sure that all citizens have equal rights?

We are very fortunate to have such a beautiful country but we take things for granted. We even take bad leadership for granted. Can we do something, take action, positive action and foster growth? Take Singapore for example, they used us as an example to develop their country. First thing they did was stop corruption from the top. There are no excuses for us now. We had a war going on and we used that as an excuse. The war is over now and yet the country continues to plunge. At least, we had the freedom to speak our mind even with a war raging but no Sri Lanka has been muzzled. We’ve been limited to the face and voice of Rajapaksha. We as a nation deserve better.

It has been 24 days today since they illegally detained my father. For what reason? No one knows. Not you, not me, or the government. Isn’t that insane? They tell the world that my father lives in a luxury hotel room. Let me tell you about the place they’ve put him in. He was taken on 8 February to the Navy base. They were afraid to take him to an army base because they thought that the army officers and soldiers would see the injustice of the situation and try to rescue him. That first day, my father didn’t even have any food to eat. The windows were sealed with wood. There was zero ventilation in the room. The military police and navy soldiers who were outside guarding the room had a portable ventilation system but my father was denied sunshine and clean air to breathe. The past year’s attacks and the suicide bomber incident has weakened my father’s lungs and he needs a ventilation system. After having complained several times, they’ve now unsealed one window and put a tiny iron mesh. When my mother asked if we could give him a small portable ventilation system, they refused. The past terrorist leaders are living under luxury roofs in comparison to the small room where my father, once the hero, is shut.

After the first hearing of my father’s fundamental rights case on 23 February, the supreme court granted visits from his attorney, but until the beginning of March, there were people who were going beyond supreme court orders and has not let lawyers visit my father. My father is only given two newspapers to read, pro-government newspapers: Daily News and Dinamina. The government is doing their best to mislead the people by showing that they have given my father every comfort.

The attack on my family doesn’t end there. The government arrested my father for no charges but they are watching my mother to find faults in whatever possible way. Her speeches are recorded by the government everyday to find a point to accuse her. Now, they are accusing my sister of being a part of some money laundering scheme and my bother-in-law as a arms dealer. The only person left is me. I wonder what they will come up next.

Why are they harassing us? If they think the election is fair, why go to this trouble of painting us black and harassing those who’ve supported us? Why attack if you have nothing to defend? Is it a crime to have an opposition party in a country? It has only been a year since we earned peace, or thought we earned it. I do not understand what is happening but I do believe that time will tell and the truth will be set free. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but a day will come. Until then, we need courage to go on.

  6. Aparna, Your father was mislead by the politicians. They are all dirty people, ALL OF THEM, no matter wat color, party or belief. They have only one aim, POWER. I think that should be crystal clear to you by now.

We all revere your father, but there's nothing anyone can do. They will have there way.

At least now, yr Dad should shun politics and go somewhere else and live. Its wat he deserves.

May be somewill tell me i'm stupid, but none of those who will say so will come to step out to help or stand up against your dad. Its just words and nothing else. This is a nation of hypocrites, whether anyone likes it or not, thats the truth.

Try and convince your Dad to step out of politics, its not a gentleman's game.

  9. As a proud Sri Lankan living in Australia..I always had a great faith in General Fonseka and is a man with courage, determination, faith in him and his men.Regardless what other people say SF contributed major part in elimating LTTE.Lets accept it and admit it.And if SF was corrupt, dishonest, had illegal dealings, why not it was addressed before? There are 100s of ministers (As a matter of fact almost everyone is a minister in this government) who (Most of them) are thugs, dishonest. So what action MR has taken to get rid of those people? NOTHING.

Every negative thing can be turned around to be positive.I believe more SL people now get behind SF..

Lets not devide this great nation.SF has commited war crimes..it is really funny to see "KARUNA" was second incharge of LTTE who killed thousands including our most venerable Bikkus is walking hand in hand with MR and others. How can you justify that?

I can see all those politicians are wearing a PIRITH NULE.What Buddhism is all about Maitree,Ahinsa. These so called SL politicians are a SHAME TO OUR GREAT NATION, SHAME TO OUR GREAT COUNTRY, SHAME TO BUDDHISM.

I know SF will be cleared soon and he will be FREED..Our paryers are with him

  10. You and your father has to explain how amass so much money in so short time. You and your father claim that you are crystal clean. Now every body knows that you are also shady as everybody else. To me even that is OK. But your father has no right to use common people's respect against somebody else out of personal anger against somebody. Your father run the army as his backyard. No body questioned it then because of the bigger objective. Your father never showed his magnanimity when he was riding high wasn't he. Asking to be field marshal and increasing size of the army is uncalled for. People sacrificed so much over the years not to maintain a big army. You better do some soul searching.

  11. by the way why did ur father wanted to be the president ? he was suppose to retire but then tell me from ur heart what was the real reason behind it . am sure it was not to serve the people , u can say that but as people we know he wanted to take revenge from people too but the coin twisted . so deal with it now

  12. Dear Aparna ,
Please igore the traitors who has written bad comments regarding your father. Thay are all bunch of morons who has come to distroy our beloved country. One day they will all suffer.

The majority of the people of this country are with him !!

  13. Oh. Fine. Please explain the following:
1.How do you account for the wealth amassed by your father and relatives. Are they leagally earned by your father by way of his salary?
2.How do you account for the enormous amt of USDollars found in your grandmother's pocession? Did your grandmother earn all this money in some business? And that too in USDs?
    3. What about the weapons contract by your brother.
    4. O.K. If your father is so clean, why should he aspire to be the Prseident of Srilanka.
    5. He excuted the Tamil rebels when they surrendered, and says that he was ordered to kill them, by Rajapakshe. If Rajapakshe orders him to kill your mother and all his children, will he do so?
If you still think that your father is good, please answer my queries dear. How can you and your father claim that you are innocent clean. You are also are crooks as every opportunist. Your father run the army as his brand of private hooligans to exterminate people.Your father never showed his magnanimity and was brutal to the core.Asking to be field marshal and increasing size of the army is really too much. Do you still claim that your father and you all are innocent?
    Will you explain?

  14. Your father dug his own grave, then jumped into it and challenge people outside to bury him live if they can. That's what happened. STUPIDITY should have limits, but not for your father.

  15. If your father has won the elections, he would have put Rajapaksha in the prison. He lost his head after killing Prabhakaran and his gang, and the elections too. So, the jackal Rajapaksha has put him inside. All because of 'megalomania'.If you look into the history, all megalomaniacs will have such endings. It's only the beginning of his ending. Rajapakha will follow suit, soon.

  19. Hi Aparna,
I never knew that you are living in the U.S and sending this appeal to all. You want to live in comfort and absolute safety leaving your father alone here. Then how come you expect others to sympathize with you and your father.is your father a patriot and sacrificed his life for your nation? All the time you are worried about your father and your relatives. There are many in the world have sacrificed their lives, for the sake of their countries and the humanity. Your father is put in prison not for doing any kind of sacrifice for SriLanka. Under the pretext of saving your nation from the rebels, he did several heinous acts. He crossed words with the heartless president of yours, as he hoped to win the elections. He lost; and as expected is put behind bars. You say that there is no reason for your father's imprisonment. May be Rajapaksha is scared that he will pull the carpet from under his feet one day or may do away with him. All in self defense. Self defense and selfishness do not see any fairness.

Ok.Aparna. Now what you should do?

Come down to SriLanka right away. Don't be in the U.S and try instigating people. Whoever tell you or write to you that your father is a hero, are not telling you the truth. Serve your people. Try to uplift your country from its sorrows. Dedicate yourself for the causes of SriLankans, Muslims and Tamils and every one. They will all hail you.

Don't keep singing the same song about your father all the time. O.K?

  22. As ABORIGENES says, donate all the property you have and your father has for noble causes. First, donate a good amount to him so that he can effectively use it to nurse the needy.
You are upset that your father doesn’t have all the comforts in the jail; and he was whisked away quite unexpectedly from his office. How many people lost their lives in the war between the troops and rebels? How many old and withered, women and innocent children were killed by your father’s army? Scores of people suffer in your country because of the recent war. They are without proper shelter and live in hunger. Many are battered in their hearts and souls. They are all sick and debilitated. All have lost all hope to live. Whether they’ll live the next day is a big question for them. Think about them before you make a list of what all comforts your father is missing.
Come out of your ‘ivory tower’. Take the next plane and come down to Colombo.
Go to those downtrodden souls. Be with them. Comfort them. Serve them. Give them food, clothing and medical care. Good people will automatically join you. With their help and with your abundant money, construct shelters for those people living in the jungles. Build schools for children and hospitals. Don't expect help from your government as they won't help you. Go and spend quality time with the unfortunate people - Tamils, Sinhalese, Christians and Muslims, who are victims of the war in your country. If you really dedicate yourself for their welfare, they'll all praise you and pray for you. If your father is freed, take him with you. Then, God will forgive your father for all the sins he has done in collusion with Rajapaksha. You'll become a real Hero.
All who were affected by your father, all your countrymen and the whole world will praise you as the "Mother Teresa of SriLanka".
    Will you do it?

  23. Did not read any of the comment and did not read much at all. I just want to give my point of view.
    1.Sinhala people forget easily
2.Current government would not give away that easily, so they are obviously going to keep General Fonseka under custody untill the election is over, That is to make sure they get 2/3 that requires to ament the constitution without support of any other party.
3.They will pin down Sarath Fonseka for the murder of Lasantha, no matter who really did it.
4.If they can't send him to jail, he would be in house arrest untill he is crippled and they will make him suicide.
5.No matter how much money other polititions hide under their bed, they will print money to make Sarath Fonseka "dirty".
6.They will make sure to make the world aware that his family really don't care about him. (Weather it is true or not)
7.Best way to win this battle is to get international help.
I have not seen Sri Lanka for 8 years, so I might be wrong.

  26. I am not having a different view. I see people who are trying to take advantage of a girl whose father is in jail. There are many politicians who own houses in other countries and their children educated in other countries. So don't be jealous of what others have and what you all don't have. Accept it as faith.

  27. well night wish as for aparna her father is a government servant . sureally he cant be earning so much of money with out other income sources to educated her daughter in the US , its not about jealousy its about how they get such amounts of money , i can call it blood money ,

so i guess aparna also should accept this as faith for her dady being in jail . i guess what goes around come around ,

how can we take advantage of this girl , do u think shes 12 yrs old , we are just discussing .

  32. There are some people who seems to me like Fonsekas great enemies, but the real fact is they are jealous and peeping into this blog. What they really like is to make themselves feel satisfied by accusing Fonseka and her daughters. I am also aware that Aborigine is on that fake Facebook account of Aparnas. (Anyone like Aborigine can make fake accounts, in fact I have not heard of any aborigine who has a Facebook account). Read carefully I am not accusing, just making assumptions, and all the negative commenter’s tend to comment in a row. Grow up and try to be a helping hand to whoever is in need. We all are born naked and when we die we don’t take anything with us, whatever good or bad you do will remain.

Mrs Fernando alleged that General Fonseka had even denied her husband the 'Parama Vibhushana' gallantry award recommended by Late Gen. Denzil Kobbekaduwa for his dare devil action during the 'Operation Eagle' to rescue security forces stranded in the Jaffna Fort and the subsequent Elephant Pass operation.
